My painting practice addresses the landscape, exploring how sustainability manifests within the landscape and constructing uncertain narratives around human intervention into the landscape. Recent work focusses on renewable power structures, displacing the notion of the site and redressing histories of landscape painting. The visual representations of the environment are informed by the complexities of sustainability, public and political influence and how the landscape is forged by industry and power. In the past decade I have collaborated with scientists from The University of Edinburgh on a number of research projects into sound in the environment and renewable power, including site visit to specific locations such as Southern India, and ongoing explorations of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. I am an active member of the Reading Landscape research cluster at GSA, am a member of the AHRC Peer Review College and sit on the Editorial Board of the Scottish Universities Press.
I have developed and delivered Fine Art learning and teaching for over 20 years and I am Academic Development Lead for the School of Fine Art at GSA. Previously I was acting Head of Painting and Printmaking (2019-2021), leading the largest department at GSA, and was Academic Lead International, where I developed academic and research links globally. I have led a number of cross disciplinary strands including being Cross School Course Leader, Academic Lead on the HEA funded project The Anatomy of Employability and Programme Leader for the International Foundation at GSA. I was also Academic Lead for the Phoenix Bursary, a Scottish Government funded alumni support scheme where I set up partnerships with top international art schools. I have lectured at national and international academic institutions including in China and India. External examining roles include for the MA Art and Design Practice at Bucks New University and the BA Fine Art at Salford University.
I have ongoing engagement with DIY practices since 1999 when I set up the acclaimed Glasgow based artist-run gallery Switchspace, working with key artists in Scotland. I have been on numerous Boards and Councils including for the Scottish Artists’ Union, Talbot Rice Art Gallery Edinburgh, The Royal Glasgow Institute, Market Gallery Glasgow and SWG3. I have also worked at the Scottish Arts Council, where I led the funding for individual artists in Scotland, developed artist residencies and provided strategic support for arts organisations.
I currently supervise four PhD students in the areas of expanded painting, translations and methodologies within painting, audio visual performance and material culture. I am interested in collaborative projects with researchers or artists and in supervising PhD students in contemporary painting, women in painting, landscape art practices and in representations of sustainability.
