Caroline Douglas is the Fedwa Malti-Douglas Short-Term Fellow with the American Philosophical Society. She is an artist and historian of early photography who is studying chemical networks of the late 18th and early 19th centuries to explore women's experimental practice and its contribution to the invention of photography.

Her paper explores women’s experimental practice and contributions to the development of the invention of photography through the case study of one chemist, Elizabeth Fulhame. Undertaking her pre-photographic work in Edinburgh in the 1780s, Fulhame was granted an honorary membership of the Chemical Society of Philadelphia in 1798. The paper brings together archival research and creative art practice to explore the role of Fulhame and women more broadly in the invention of photography.
