Abstract:

Lord Cockburn’s disgust of the ‘gapers and gawkers’ who, in his eyes, brought distaste to the city centre, saw Maria Theresa Short removed from the Calton Hill. This punishment for her success (and the voyeurism of others) will be scrutinised in relation to the gendered boundaries of early photography.

In 2021 I undertook a 12-week activity/placement as a DTP researcher alongside Collective and their Observatory House partners. Over the course of this time, I (re)established a Camera Obscura in the Old Observatory House.
