Abstract: | This project concerns itself with the notion of photographic Gesture following a direct response to the landscape. Part of a multi-output project, ‘Chalkis’ is made in the ancient town of Chalkis in Greece> the town is renowned of a rare tidal phenomenon, the tides change over twice on any given day. The Tidal motion in the land proposes a framework that making of images can function in dialogue with. During 6 hours – a series of images are made - a direct action in pressing time. The time is not defined by anything else than the land that surrounds it. During this time limit the photographic gesture is complete (by definition), giving way to yet another gesture – the proposition of a sentence in response to the condition that allowed the work to take place. Seen more as a direct response to the land and the conditions that define it, Chalkis proposes deeper looking in the context of an extended snapshot. | ||||
