Abstract: | Soft Paste is work of creative-writing/ poetry commissioned for the solo exhibition of the same title by the artist Zoe Williams, which took place at SWG3 Galery, Glasgow (15th June – 16th July, 2013). The text was available on site for the duration of the exhibition in the form of a limited-edition silk-screen print. The aim of the text was to communicate a sense of the artist’s intentions by emotional and poetic suggestion rather than direct explanation, and relates to the discipline of ekphrasis – creative responses to visual art in poetry and fiction. The text was developed through research into visual and cultural references made in the show. The final poem centres on the figure of Baubo, an obscene character who features in the classical myth of Ceres and Proserpine and who is mentioned in online publicity for the bespoke dildo that Williams refers to in her show. | ||||
