Abstract: | An album of recordings of modular synthesiser performances exploring reciprocal responses between the instrument and the performer. A series of semi-stochastic and abstract tracks is presented under a title suggesting more conventional notions of the ‘easy listening’ genre.

Additional Information: | Acquired by the British Library Sound Archive, December 2021 1. Research Question How can electronic abstraction create possibilities to examine musical conventions and redefine the parameters of how meaning is found in music? Are such experiments still necessary, over fifty years after Morton Subotnik’s ‘Silver Apples of the Moon’, or are they more important than ever? 2. Methods Each track began with the creation of a stochastic/self-playing patch for a modular synthesiser. This was set in motion and then responded to in the form of a live studio performance. A number of different iterations of each piece were recorded before a final selection was made for this collection. 3. Context of Contribution ‘Silver Apples of the Moon’ by Morton Subotnik. Nonesuch Record, 1969. ‘Entropical Paradise’ by Douglas Leedy. Seraphim, 1971. ‘people the sky’ by Michael Czajkowski. Vanguard, 1969. ‘Savage Songs’ by Jorge Antunes. Pogus Productions, 1975.
