Sit-in # 4 Outside the Circle is a group exhibition curated by Sophia Hao, part of the wider project The Ignorant Art School: Five Sit-ins towards Creative Emancipation curated by Sophia Hao. The five Sit-ins towards Creative Emancipation adopt the activist tactic of occupying institutional space as a critical and creative attitude.
The exhibition Outside the Circle proposes an invitation to witness and participate in a season of radical emancipation, resistance, survival and collective action from both western and Global Majority countries. The exhibition and event programme explore the subject of radical emancipation, resistance, survival and collective action inspired by and generated from intersectional feminist and queer movements, with a focus on the practices of ‘knowing’ constitutive of intersectional feminist and queer movements.
The exhibition comprised artworks, archive materials from invited collective groups, exhibition ephemera, performances, public events, and included a new commissioned video collaboration between Sam Ainsley and Anne-Marie Copestake, titled 2024; Circle of strength.
