Abstract:

‘Retouching the Archive’ is a practice-led project on the role of women in the making of early photography, 1780-1846. It combines archival research and contemporary art practice to explore the contributions of three women who lived and worked in Scotland: Elizabeth Fulhame, Mary Somerville and Elizabeth Johnston Hall.

The exhibition was presented to support my thesis project 'Retouching the Archive: Women's Contributions to Early Photography in Scotland'. The solo show was held in the Upper Gulbenkian Gallery of the Darwin Building at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington, London.
