In Alain Resnais' Toute la Mémoire du Monde, a forbiddingly inhuman landscape in which man attempts to imprison ‘knowledge’ in an effort to counter the limits of his own memory. Only the act of individual selection - a single patron choosing a specific text – is there hope that this undifferentiated mass of knowledge can be redeemed as the reader makes discriminating use of the collective national memory for the fulfilment of a constructive individual purpose. The Practicing Landscape Field Guide series has emerged from the online seminar series run by Reading Landscape in 2021-22, under the overarching title, Landscapes of Energy and Extraction. The short paper asks questions about publishing - in the current financial and environmental landscape, the question of dissemination through traditional publishing pertains. A possible answer is to consider the book as an 'anomic' object, one that defies and surpasses its own mode of production and traces it's own line of inquiry.
