An online exhibition and discussion/presentation in the ONE WORK series hosted by LUX Scotland. Exhibition throughout March 2021, with captions by Collective Text. Presentation and discussion event 25 March 2021. Response text written by Marcus Jack, see documents.
ONE WORK is a series of online events that focus closely on a single work. These generous discussions provide an opportunity for an artist to present a recent work and talk through how the work came into being. Each work is available as a month-long online screening, followed by a specially commissioned written response that serves as documentation of both the work and the discussion.
In her presentation Anne-Marie outlined the conditions and environment that led towards her making the film, filmed in her home neighbourhood and within a temporary community. Anne-Marie reflected on the social impact of changes within the environment of her home neighbourhood, where questions arise for further work.
The approach taken in the use of audio captions, created with Collective Text, was discussed, particularly in relation to the complete lack of spoken language within the film - how might sound that is heard be most directly, simply, and elegantly suggested by written captions ?
Technical aspects of working with Super 8 and the grading were discussed, as well as the production and critical concerns within editing the footage and creating the quadraphonic soundtrack, which was produced live with sound engineer and musician Jamie Grier.
A love by Anne-Marie Copestake
Super 8 transferred to HD / Scotland / 2019
A love forms an approach to history unfolding in Copestake’s home neighbourhood and within a temporary community. The film foregrounds quiet and tender engagement, respect, various forms of love, presence, absence, and ritual to an extent. There is a deliberate lack of language in the film, underlining the unuttered and recurring inadequacy of language, especially in the expression of uproot and the depth of emotions engendered. A love considers individual and collective values, desire for recognition of lives, and the necessity for communal recognition.
