The tetrapharmakon (τετραφάρμακον), literally translated as "four-part remedy" or "four-part cure," emerges from the rich philosophical landscape of Hellenistic Greece, specifically rooted in Epicurean philosophy. This fundamental philosophical approach represents a radical attempt to address human suffering by confronting fundamental existential anxieties through rational understanding and philosophical practice. This four-part remedy has it’s origins to an attempt by Epicurus of Samos (341-270 BCE) t develop a comprehensive philosophical strategy for achieving ataraxia (αταραξία) - a state of tranquillity and freedom from fear. Unlike other philosophical schools of his time, Epicurus sought to provide practical guidance for living a good life, focusing on eliminating suffering through philosophy. Following four main principles the proposition is put forward that critically engaging with emotional responses through making addresses fundamental human needs for meaning, connection, and hope.
