Abstract:
Tracing Echoes retraced the footsteps of the pioneering photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron, and a number of her models such as Mary Hillier and Kate Keown. These women were also the photographer’s domestic servants from the local area of Freshwater, on the Isle of Wight. Dimbola Lodge, Cameron’s home on the island, was also the site of her most productive period as an artist. It is Cameron’s work with this particular group, her house on the Isle of Wight and the consequent archives that are pivotal to this book. In different ways all three areas are repositories of a ‘past,’ attached to which are issues of heritage and legacy; Cameron’s prints are preserved in a number of museum collections (significantly in England, Scotland and the USA) while parts of Dimbola Lodge are currently being restored to its Victorian character. Both the house and these archives aim to preserve Cameron’s photographic legacy. Tracing Echoes introduced another: a living genealogy, the descendants of the photographed women.
