Decolonising education is a crucial and timely issue. This chapter considers how immersive learning design can support learners in understanding complex/contested heritage and promote pluralism and critical reflection. Outdoor, geolocated augmented reality (AR) layers digital learning content into real places, allowing multiple histories to be represented within a coherent immersive experience. This study analyses the design of a smartphone app, “Empire Retold”, which combines archival multimedia with contemporary data gathered from communities local to the site of the British Empire Exhibition of 1938, an inherently colonial, largely forgotten, event. Polyvocal, participatory methods elicited a multiplicity of reflections on history, identity, and imperialism. Traineeships in writing for AR were provided, leading to the integration of community insights into three audio-driven AR narratives. Narratives are delivered using spoken-word and immersive sound design, using a pre-existing mobile AR game platform. This chapter presents fruitful methods and recommendations for the ethical, inclusive, and polyvocal design of audio-led immersive heritage mobile applications.
