This slide presentation considered a number of items of Scottish Giftware. It begins with a sweet tin in the form of McBowser, a take on the Loch Ness Monster from the 1930s, and then moves through eleven other examples going back to the late 19th century before returning to the first. The discussion considered if the item was designed as a gift (gift-ware) was a souvenir that could double as a gift (or be seen as a gift to oneself), a presentation object (is that really a gift?) or merely something given as a gift but not really designed as one. The presentation attempted to define 'gift-ware' as having a particular socio-cultural position coming out of the development of a mass market with small amounts of disposable income, therefore problematised by issues of 'taste' and 'good design' that were current at the time, issues that still remain today.
