Abstract: | Two new works included in the Bristol Artist Book Event in June 2024. The first Bristol Artist’s Book Event (BABE) was organised by Sarah Bodman and Tom Sowden in collaboration with Peter Begen, Julian Warren and Snoozie Claiden at Arnolfini in 2007. It has since grown into an international event showcasing artists’ books to the public over a weekend every two years. In 2022 BABE moved to our Bower Ashton campus to create space for a larger event with talks, displays, performances and workshops alongside 100 exhibitor stands. Since its first outing, BABE has established a great reputation as a relaxed and friendly event to meet and talk to book artists about their work and buy works of art. We have 100+ exhibitors coming from all over the UK and Ireland, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden and the USA and books arriving from Australia, Poland and the USA. This exhibition consisted of over 100 contributors who make artist books and publications with this event being the largest showcase of such material in the UK on an annual basis. The public are encouraged to interact with the material on show and take part in the many talks scheduled throughout the event. |

A free programme of talks and workshops accompanies BABE:
Talks in Room 1D005 (first floor D block, right hand side)
Hosted by Emma Gregory. Publishers and artists who work with books discuss aspects of their practice, give readings and performances. Each talk or performance is 20 minutes. All welcome, free talks, no booking needed, just turn up. Download the programme of Talks and Readings in 1D005 here.
Talks in the Special Collections Corner (library, first floor B block)
Talks take place in the corner of the library devoted to artists’ books. They are purposely informal and low-tech. A unique experience for all involved. Hosted by Bower Ashton Library staff. Each talk lasts 15 minutes. All welcome, free talks, no booking needed, just turn up. Download the Collections Corner Talks programme here.
