'The Curtain' uses fiction as a method to examine the legacy of Margaret Mackintosh in the Vienna scene at the start of the 20th century and her proximity to, and involvement in, the formation of the Wiener Werkstätte. This paper writes into archival gaps, bringing us fictionally into the space of the Waerndorfer music room built in 1902-3, which was designed by Margaret, her husband, her sister and her brother in-law. The room as it was conceived no longer exists apart from a couple of photographs as some recently unearthed furniture and decorative panels. Fictive narratives are used to address archival gaps and speculate on the proximity and influence of Margaret mackintosh in Vienna during the time of this commission and its completion soon after.
