Abstract:

My essay, 'Culture Shocks' explores the intersection of values between artist residency programs and art schools. Drawing parallels between the sensation of culture shock commonly experienced by international students and the deliberate sense of displacement often encountered in artist residencies, this essay examines the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the perception of studying and creating art.

It delves into how both art schools and residency programs have adapted to these changes, including efforts to decolonize practices and embrace experimentation. Additionally, the essay explores the concept of 'post-studio' practice, cultural exchange, and the notion of the art school as a laboratory.

The challenges and limitations posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with the imperative to decolonize practices, have prompted critical reflection, akin to experiencing culture shock. This essay poses questions about the enduring influence of these changes on the perception and operation of art school projects and artist residency programs.

The publication revolves around the nature of the resident-host encounter. From the outset, the editors did not aim to present an analysis of the operation of individual spheres of artist residencies, but rather to compile in dialogue a polyphonic publication that illustrates the nuances of residency workand artists’ experiences, as well as the unstable constellations of artist residencies with its open-ended structure. Artist residency programmes can serve as a model for dealing with the ever-changing contemporary world and societies. All this makes it possible to fulfill the dream of a world where there is a balance between acceptance and separateness. This world offers authenticity, permanent change and constant transformation.
