This invited keynote lecture is a reflection on Bottomley’s own training and work in Higher Education. The talk spans twenty-five years situated across key historic UK cities that grew during the 19th Century Enlightenment (London, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Glasgow) and Industrial revolution. These cities were the origins of mid-19th century Municipal Design Schools and established to improve industrial and ornamental design for the countries manufacturers. Over the last two centuries Art and Design has evolved, yet the legacy and importance of the crafts (Sennet & Adamson) is considered alongside the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinarity.
