Abstract: | Peter McCaughey / WAVEparticle as part of the ongoing art strategy for Lauriston, Glasgow, has designed, built, and curated a new space for the encountering the live aspects, and archival aspects of the ongoing 10-year art strategy. (2015-2025) The strategy, framed in this space, actively interrogates ideas about ‘Regeneration’ and frames WAVEparticle’s approach to and ongoing exploration of the contested term of ‘Creative Placemaking’ 166 Gorbals Street launched on 10th February 2022, as a community resource- a cross between a local archive, an art gallery, and a gathering space for workshops. The feel of the space is industrial- with raw brickwork and a salon style hang of artwork and documentation of the events with the local community, in the area over recent years. The walls are lined with work from the Laurieston Living Art Strategy- a plan that embraces a contemporary vision of events-led and permanent artworks that are embedded and aspirational and allow great scope to involve community members in shaping the immediate place they live. This work includes details of the time-based art strategy, with models, films, still portraits and a series of over 200 video portraits of local community. Also included are documents of permanent works delivered as part of the art strategy and the opportunity and plans going forward. WAVEparticle has gained an international reputation for making artwork that celebrates people and their environments. This archive and workspace is the next in a sequence of works that present the people who live and work in a place, at the centre of a public artwork, in that place. Peter McCaughey, lead artist of WAVEparticle said; “We have curated a series of highlights from the art strategy which won the SURF award for best approach to creative placemaking in 2016. All the teams of architects working in the area have contributed drawings of their work, much of it also award-winning. The intention is that the space feels like a working room, full of interesting artefacts, models and plans for the future, a gathering of the past, the present and the possible. The hope is that the community will occupy this space for workshops and events, and we will work together to shape plans for future events and permanent works. We believe resilience is all around us, evident in the strong communities like the Gorbals and Laurieston, we also believe that if regeneration means anything it has to begin with, and end with, a focus on people.” | ||||
