Critically appraised in an article in the magazine Art Rite in 1976; a group of artists’ books, made by Adrian Piper, Jacki Apple, Jennifer Bartlett, Constance DeJong, Kathy Acker, Carolee Schneemann and others, were described by the writer John Howell, as “a collective phenomena, a kind of writing which looks like a style inside language but outside literature.” Several of these books were first published as serialisations; hand produced and assembled using Xerox and other forms of reprography but later produced as collected works using commercial offset printing. By embracing hybridisation within both material and conceptual formulations, this presentation will explore how the context of writing in art practice was innovated through the disruptive introduction of fiction, specifically in work made by women, and the effects this had on the aesthetics of print reproduction. The notion of interior and exterior as positioned by Howell can be witnessed in this context through the materialities of self-publishing, between ink and type, the page and the cover.
