Commissioned by the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), in Glasgow to produce a print for their queer timɘs school project, itself an important milestone in the development of LGBTQI+ equality in the Scottish education system. Outcome: artwork (photo montage/c type print) titled ‘Angelic Conversation’, now part of the Gallery of Modern Art Collection.

queer timɘes school prints explored aspects of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Polysexual, Queer, Intersex + and Allies (LGBTPQI+A) histories and experiences in Scotland from the past 50 years. The exhibition included education prints commissioned from 10 artists, a film programme, a changing display of archive material and a public programme. This exhibition was part of queer timɘes school (July 2018 – March 2019) – an art and citizenship project that tours schools– for all LGBTPQI adults, and their allies, over the age of 16 – commissioned (and subsequently acquired) by GoMA, from queer, socially-engaged artist Jason E. Bowman. It is about stepping-stones as much as about recognised milestones and aims to recognise the important heritage of LGBTPQI+A people as organisers, campaigners, shape-shifters, change-makers and community-builders..

‘Angelic Conversation’ is a photo montage formed from found magazine pages, collaged, scanned and edited to present an esoteric queer history; with references that will reveal themselves to some. The title is taken from the Derek Jarman film The Angelic Conversation, calling to mind what Jarman described as ‘a dream world, a world of magic and ritual’. This essence is used to reference the ritualistic and transformative facets of make-up, through the mirror image with the subtle use of green ‘lipstick’ inspired by the green carnations often worn by Oscar Wilde, a private symbol hinting towards same-sex love.
