The group exhibition 'Pretty Ugly’ curated by @wench.collective + @art.emisia.vulgaris was organised by current Painting and Printmaking students at the Glasgow School of Art: Sofia Caers, Olivia Chebac, Mira Knoche, Julia Varis, who exhibited their work alongside a range of guest artists and performers.

The press release states:

“we have invited a group of budding and established artists, performers, activists and musicians based in Scotland, to showcase their different takes on female gazes on women, by women, for women and welcoming all the lovers thereof.”

The sculpture I exhibited in ‘Pretty Ugly’ is part of a new body of work; a group of 10 small scale sculptures and 30 drawings. In researching and executing this series of works I have become increasingly concerned with; the dissolution of the boundaries of the subject and the rise of the ‘cybernetic organism’- networked, technologised, and depersonalised. At the same time, I am also exploring a critique of these conceptions of embodiment as ecologically and theoretically limited in an era of anthropogenic climate change. My choice of materials for the sculptures - waste products, mechanical artifacts, human hair, fragments of clothing, paper, and other detritus - therefore speaks strongly both of cybernetic ideas and of my critique of them.
