Abstract: | Group Exhibition: Prosaic Mosaic – A Survey of New Painting Verticals, oil on board, 15x15cm, 2019 was selected by curators Sean Williams (Contemporary British Painting), Dr Bryan Eccleshall (Open College of the Arts) and Katya Robin (Turps Banana) as part of Prosaic Mosaic – a Survey of New Painting. This exhibition was part of the evolving ‘prosaic’ series of events – which focuses in on the most straightforward and perhaps pedestrian definition of ‘painting’ – pigment on substrate. The work included in this group exhibition is part of ongoing research inquiry into the use of painting as a tool for visualizing and comprehending spaces and places. The painting ‘Verticals’ was requested by the curator Bryan Eccleshall for this international exhibition. The quiet contemplation of the everyday source material – the suburban barrier fence – was fitting for the general everyday theme for the exhibition itself. Prosaic Mosaic was intended to reflect on the straightforward act of pushing and pulling pigment on substrate; the most prosaic definition of the activity of painting. Within my own research, aesthetic and intellectual focus has recently lingered on the barrier fence and the basic physical activity of space-splitting and dividing up territories of ownership within suburban spaces. Gallery Text: The exhibition features small works from over fifty artists. Seen together, the varied works form a larger picture - a mosaic of contemporary painting practice. Using a prosaic definition of painting - ‘pigment on substrate’ - has allowed the curators to showcase a diverse range of approaches to making. The way the work is displayed will trigger connections between the paintings. The show brings together work by noted painters from across the UK, Ireland and beyond with artists from the curators’ home in Sheffield. The curators are keen to present exciting work regardless of the artists’ perceived status. Equal standing is given to work from artists at all career stages, from students to prize-winners. The exhibition programme includes a Painters’ Forum event which will be open to the public, providing a platform for critique and conversation. This will be held on Saturday 26 Oct between 2-4pm. PROSAIC MOSAIC will contribute to and develop connections within the already vibrant art scene in the city. | ||||
