Abstract: | The 'Coffee Letters', written collaboratively by Susan Brind & Jim Harold, are extracted from an on-going larger body of work comprising over 40 letters. The letters reference observations, events and encounters that have been witnessed together or individually by the artists since the turn of the 20th-21st Century. They span that period of 20 years in terms of their dates, but have been substantially written since 2015. The 'Coffee Letters' were shown as part of 'Urban Glendi: CCFT', curated by Urban Gorillas–Yiorgos Hadjichristou for 'Buffer Fringe VI, 2019' in Nicosia. The larger body of writings, from which the 20 letters shown for Buffer Fringe VI are extracted, all relate to peripheral and border locations within the UK, mainland Europe, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean region. A substantial number of 'Coffee Letters' for this showing relate to Cyprus in particular. Ten letters were shown within the context of a UN tent (one amongst many tents that formed the Buffer Fringe festival site inside the Buffer Zone, in no-man's land, at Ledra Palace border crossing). Ten were shown within the cafe and communal area of the Home for Cooperation (an NGO focused on peace-building and inter-communal dialogue, which is also located between the border crossings of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus and South Cyprus). The letters were selected to resonate with the site and context in which they were being shown and read; specifically the the context of the Buffer Fringe's theme: "Defining the buffer zone, in between spaces". | ||||
