Abstract: | In 'The Dead Zone' installation, the artists are interested in the politics of landscape and our of physical experience of place. This specific body of work relates to their visits to the UN De-militarized Buffer Zone in Cyprus, a country which has been divided since 1974 and contains the only politically divided city in Europe. This new configuration of work is part of an ongoing collaborative project with CCFT (Creative Centre for Fluid Territories, People, Places and Processes, an international research grouping started in 2016) and their continued interest in the history of Cyprus. The differing modes of representation presented here aim to de-stabilise any singular reading of place within what is a very complex political history. It also enters the Buffer Zone itself as a liminal space of otherness.

Additional Information: | 'The Dead Zone' – Installation comprises three elements: ‘Looking South – Facing North II’, a painted area of wall and vinyl text; 3 x Digital Photographic prints from within the Cyprus Buffer Zone, also known as the ‘Dead Zone’; and Letter works, a selection of letters specifically relating to Cyprus, extracted from a larger series of works known as ‘Coffee Letters’. ‘Looking South–Facing North II’ was previously presented in the form of a publicly sited poster work (2017) located in North and South Nicosia. Here it is reinterpreted and presented for a gallery context and to provide a backdrop against which the two other elements of the installation can be interpreted. The texts are drawn from fieldwork observations made in South Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus over a number of visits. Where the texts overlap, the observations have been made inside the UN de-militarized Buffer Zone: where access has been negotiated in territory not accessible to either Southern or Northern Cypriots. The photographs that comprise ‘Cyprus Buffer Zone series – The Dead Zone’ were taken inside the UN de-militarized Buffer Zone on the east side of Nicosia at a point where the ‘Dead Zone’ intersects a suburb called Kaimakli. The photographs were taken during fieldwork undertaken in November 2016. ‘Letter Works’ A selection of 6 letters that relate specifically to Cyprus has been made from the larger series ‘Coffee Letters’ that uses a mixture of descriptive, auto-ethnographic and phenomenological experiences to provide insight into the complexity of Cyprus' history.
