Abstract: | A short essay on the life of Freda Bedi, published in an on-line international literary publication, using extracts of my play/showcase Beyond the Mud Walls. The work weaves a critical, reflective commentary into the extracts, highlighting key moments of the life of Freda Bedi; an English woman who fought for India’s independence and later became a Buddhist nun. (See Beyond the Mud Walls performance research output for details.) The dramatic extracts used in the essay include monologues of Freda, as she reflects on her sense of ‘Indianness’, despite being a white English woman. In the play/showcase, this is illustrated using her sari as an item of clothing that begins to define her transformation, in terms of national identity. The essay also features a monologue of Nur Jahan, a powerful leader whose life is a testament of what would now be termed a type of ‘feminism’. | ||||||
