Abstract: | This solo exhibition ‘What the Voice Said’ was commissioned by The Suttie Arts Space which is situated in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The exhibition presented conversations between people who are trying to find ways of speaking without ‘regulation’ and people trying to speak out about unbearable pressure in their working lives. These texts moved between fiction and non-fiction; sometimes overtly escapist, other times confrontationally real. The texts were hung upon large scale photographs by Francis McKee, Isobel Lutz-Smith and Tamsin Greenlaw. The photographs provided a sensual home for words, giving a place to observations which tilt towards the generic and everyday. Particular phrases turn up again and again as posters setting a rhythm to the overlapping narratives. The exhibition offered an intimate reading experience against photographs of hospitals mid-renovation and streets in the early morning obscured by fog. All the texts were derived from interviews with call handlers from employee assistance programmes in Scotland. | ||||
