Abstract:

This book looks at the broad significance of triumphal celebrations and civic and courtly festivals in Scotland in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century. It considers the spaces where those events took place as themselves 'performers', loaded with and expressing social, cultural, and political meanings. The focus is on the civic spaces of Edinburgh in the period between 1503 and 1633, but this book looks also at courtly spaces and festivals, at other Scottish burghs, at a comparison with European cities, courts, and festivals.
