A 12 month project culminating in a large scale commission and exhibition at CAMPLE LINE - an independent arts organisation in rural Dumfriesshire dedicated to presenting international contemporary art and film for residents of the region and visitors from further afield.
The first formal presentation of Hopkins’ work in a rural location, Flying Fox was made in response to the context of the building and immediate area, and brought together a large-scale work of geometric abstraction spanning five walls in the CAMPLE LINE gallery space and a group of ten new and recent smaller works installed in dialogue with it.
A 26 page colour publication was produced by CAMPLE LINE to accompany the project. This included an essay by Tina Fiske relating Flying Fox to Hopkins' wider practice as well as to Dance Number, her 2017 work commissioned for the outside of the Mackintosh Building at Glasgow School of Art.
A number of public events took place over a 3 month period specifically in response to the work, including screening Maeve Brennan's film Jerusalem Pink (2016); an exhibition talk by Dr Stacy Boldrick, University of Leicester; a letterpress workshop by Rhian Nicholas of the Passenger Press; In conversation with Louise Hopkins and Tina Fiske; a reading of Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons by Dr Jane Goldman, University of Glasgow; a workshop with My Bookcase.
