Abstract: | The burgh of Edinburgh repeatedly offered King James VI (and later I of England) the ideal civic scene for the spectacle of royal majesty. For his coming of age entry in 1579, for the celebrations for the arrival and coronation of his queen, Anne of Denmark in 1590, and for his long-awaited return in 1617, the burgh of Edinburgh staged three highly individual but still spatially comparable events. This paper addresses the three ceremonies as illustrative of James' changing views on royal power, and of the Crown's relationship with the influential burgh of Edinburgh as staged through urban ceremonial. | ||||
