This is an artefact - a trade union banner - which has been co-designed with ScotPep, a Union for Scottish Sex Workers, as part of their effort to be officially recognised by the Trades Union Congress. It was printed at GSA CAT and made up by Ashleigh Miller. Critical and practical workshops with ScotPep members were held during 2017, with the final form & fabrics chosen to reflect ScotPep's wishes to have an empowering banner which referenced Trade Union history and did not determine notions of gender, sexuality or work. This banner, and scenes associated with its making, features in ‘Workers!’, (2019), a film by the Swedish artist, Petra Bauer. It will be carried by the group on future demonstrations and provide a distinctive backdrop for meetings and celebrations. A duplicate banner with a portfolio of research materials (including reflection on the process of design) has been accessioned to the University of Edinburgh's Contemporary Art Collection. Digital files relating to the final design provide ScotPep with the opportunity to reuse imagery independently or in consultation with design professionals.
