Abstract: | 'Fence, Path' and 'Path, Fence' (both 2017-18) are two oil on board works which were selected as part of the Annual PS Mirabel Open Exhibition (Manchester) in August 2018. These paintings reflected on a specific site north of Glasgow, in which parallel red blaes paths ran at either side of a chain link fence. Previously a football pitch (with a surface comprised of the typical Scottish red cinder), the site has now become overgrown, with the distinctive blaes surface now being covered in grass and weeds. The parallel paths now exist as red lines traced at either side of the metal, chain link fence. At one time the fence represented a barrier between two different pitches, separating two different games or areas of recreation. Now however, it offers up a slightly odd scenario, where attention is drawn to a space in which two distinct paths head in the same directions, lines in space which are certainly used (as no ground cover grows there) but which are kept apart by the often unnoticed barrier weave of the chain link fence. These 2 works were selected by jurors Ruth Owen (Chapel Gallery), Matt Retallick (Turnpike Gallery) and Jason Thompson (2017 PS Mirabel award winner). This blind-judged event featured work by 52 artists, including Enzo Marra, Garth Gatrix and Louisa Chambers. These are practitioners of significant national and international standing and this exhibition, an important part of the art calendar in Manchester, is well-respected in the artistic community in the UK. Additional Information: | The works submitted for Twice as Nice are part of ongoing practice-based research into barrier materials, repetitive imagery, and the ways in which everyday spaces can be divided, orientated and traversed. This research is conducted through the practice of painting, as I look to 'think through' these concerns by reflecting on the physical everyday environment. As an output, the paintings are positioned as artefacts. They formed important parts of the curated and juried annual exhibition at PS Mirabel. They were selected in a manner akin to a peer-review system, with the judges selected in the works which were most successful in their professional opinions. The status and reputation of PS Mirabel is such that this represents a significant output. | ||||
