The publication Turps Banana presents open dialogues about contemporary painting with an established format of conversational but historically informed modes of writing. This format includes presenting a series of articles of painters reflecting on the work of another painter. This article considers the development, over the past 6 years, of the work of painter Barbara Nicholls. Specifically, there is reflection on the status of the large scale watercolours exhibited at a recent solo exhibition, "Sedimentary Flow" at the New Gallery Walsall (2017). The article considers how the artist's performative working methodology, and scale of the works, both challenge the perceived domesticity of the medium.
