The significance of the details of buildings we touch and grasp on a daily (hourly sometimes) basis is often overlooked by the mediocre quality of their design and fabrication. Is meaning lost simply through a lack of craftsmanship in the artefact or through the repetition and volume of our usage with the detail? The relation of the experience of such details to the overall experience and idea of a piece of architecture is explored in this short piece, prompted by a collection of random door handles from different ages, materials and designs. This invited text contributes to the inaugural issue of a new online platform of writings and reflections on architecture, established by Marta Ascenso and Will Judge, two graduating students at stage 5 in the Mackintosh School of Architecture.
