Abstract: | 'The Garage Fordist' was a solo exhibition of work that took place at Tramway, Glasgow. It paired a new series of paintings collectively titled 'Testbeds' with an ongoing series of sculptures that reference gallery furniture. More specifically these sculptures reference barriers custom designed by specific artists to prevent the audience from touching their artworks. The 'Testbed' paintings referred to aircraft chassis developed by Lockheed Martin's so-called 'Skunkworks' covert research division. Their purpose was to explore parallels that can be drawn between the aeronautic industry and contemporaneous abstract colour field painting, which privileged optical speed as a central criteria. In attempting to blend these two disparate sources these works propose reductive abstraction a form of endless prototyping or signal tuning. | ||||
