Abstract: | 'Ballet of the Palette' took place at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, between February 2015 and January 2016. It centred around the concept of asking locally based artists to engage with 20th century artworks owned by the collection of Glasgow Museums. The artists invited were drawn from a previous group show at the museum. Entitled 'A Picture Show' this earlier exhibition was a survey of contemporary painters living and working in Glasgow. For 'Ballet of the Palette' I selected works by Colin Cina and John McLean, and wrote a short text for each that accompanied them in the gallery space. The principal goal of these texts was to articulate aspects of a narrative that is often overlooked in relation to postwar Scottish painting. These alluded to Cina's decision to study in London following on from a foundation course at the Glasgow School of Art, and a visit the American critic Clement Greenberg made to Arbroath during the 1970s. A summary of the exhibition, featuring a selection of the artist's texts, as well as an interview with the selectors by Dr Tina Fiske, was featured as part of Affiliate's 'Yearbook: 2103-2015' publication. | ||||
