Abstract: | For Wirksworth’s Arts Festival ‘7 Customs’ was commissioned by curator Rose LeJeune for the Wirksworth Parish Room. This traditional, English town hall provided a context within which to challenge the etiquette of civic behaviour. Seven original customs were written and designed, then hand painted in gold onto panels made from recycled wood using traditional marquetry techniques. The ‘7 Customs’ provided guidance on how to perform seven customs. The customs suggest an unfamiliar culture suspended out of time and place. Each custom evokes fictional social encounters that are both formal and intimate; from an unfamiliar world yet also reminiscent of local traditions. | ||||
