Abstract: | Lecturers, Thomas Greenough and Tony Brotheridge launched a global fashion project with Collaborative Partner, BINUS University, to enable students from both Indonesian and UK Universities to work together. Students from both Universities competed to design a 4-look garment and fabric collection inspired by the traditional 'ikat' motif from East Nusa Tenggara combined with their own contemporary twist. The winning students from Design at Northumbria University, Daniel Fradgley and Victoria Schofield travelled to Lombok to collaborate with the winning BINUS students to combine and finalise their designs, to enable a strong cohesion between the collections which showcased on the catwalk at Jakarta Fashion Week in November 2012. The word 'ikat' means 'to bind' and is an ancient way of creating designs and motifs in fabric by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven. | ||||
