This group exhibition combines disparate painting practices in a 'salon style' hang in spare room of a council estate pub. The pub as venue is one of a number of independent gallery spaces in London that seeks an alternative to commercial galleries. The multiple 'salon style' hang refers to 18th and 19th century hangs that were typical in the academies of art such as the Royal Academy, London. The irony of this 'high style' but outmoded hang is counterbalanced by the popular cultural reference of the local, 1960's built pub (in a modernist style). The aim was also to take known contemporary artists work into the local east end community. |
