Abstract: | Limited edition, digital, fine art print on paper, 56cm x 28cm (edition of 21) In 2012 Glasgow Women’s Library celebrated its 21st birthday. To mark two decades of life-changing work, GWL commissioned 21 internationally renowned artists and 21 published writers to create new works inspired by their unique museum, archive and library collections. The artwork '165 Stars, found in Glasgow Women's Library', is the result of having combed GWL’s lending library collecting hand drawn inscriptions left in the margins of the pages, specifically asterisks and stars found on the edges of the hundreds of donated volumes. These delicate and intimate marks describe what is thought of as being essential and act as points of connection between the absent, previous readers and us. This print brings together and permanently fixes the complete collection of stars found in Glasgow Women't Library. The commissioned artworks were exhibited at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow (September 2012) and subsequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh (July - September 2013) and Creative Scotland, Edinburgh (March - April 2014). Published in 2014 by Glasgow Women's Library and Freight Books, the commissioned prints, poems and creative writing have been brought together with the sources that inspired the work in a publication '21 Revolutions, Two Decades of Changing Minds at Glasgow Women's Library'. The publication includes essays by Fiona Bradley, Director of the Fruitmarket Gallery, writer and journalist Lesley McDowell, and co-founder of Glasgow Women’s Library Adele Patrick. | ||||
