‘In a place like that’ was an ‘exhibition as process’ in the Reid Gallery at Glasgow School of Art. The exhibition was a means of teasing out the visual ideas captured by the participating artists in the process of the research journey between Glasgow, Bergen, Odda and Orkney (also under the title ‘In a place like that’ which took place in June 2014), and of using the space of the gallery as an open studio and space for discourse: between the artists themselves; the artists and the curator; the artists with the gallery audience; and between the artists, curator and other academics with shared interests in landscape themes. The artists spent a week working speculatively, together and independently, in the gallery space with video, sound, photographs and texts, to bring together their visual research as a means of opening up the findings from their research journey to themselves and to a variety of audiences. In addition to the further examination of the research questions at the heart of this generative research journey, the exhibition as process and the collaborative approach that this involved, between artists and curator, continued to challenge the accepted artistic modes of thinking and the conditions and processes of artistic production and presentation.
