1.RESEARCH QUESTION
How did architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh answer the brief for the design of the new Glasgow School of Art building in the 1890s? What were the meanings and sources of, and influences on his designs, and what was his experience with the client while executing those designs?

2. METHOD
A historical narrative of the procedure was constructed after extensive research work was carried out in the archive of Glasgow School of Art. Particular attention was given to correspondence with the architect, the papers dealing with the competition for the design of the building, the record of the building work contained in the minutes of the Building Committee over some 15 years, and various other records and papers to do with Mackintosh’s long involvement with The Glasgow School of Art.

3. DISSEMINATION
A Paper with the same title was delivered on this research at The Mackintosh Building Centenary International Design Charette and Symposium at the Glasgow School of Art (2009), and repeated at the Centenary celebrations at Glasgow School of Art on 19th December 2009.
