This report presents findings from The Potential of BIM and Building Standards: a research project carried out from February – June 2024 by the School of Innovation and Technology (SIT) at The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in partnership with Built Environment Smarter Transformation (BE~ST), on behalf of the Building Standards Division (BSD) of the Scottish Government.

The research findings outline five key challenge areas that represent the complexities of digital transformation within the Building Standards system:
• Training, competencies and awareness
• Interactions, behaviours and attitudes
• Resourcing, cost and value
• Innovation and best practice
• Open systems and data management structures

In response to the challenge areas four recommendations were developed, each of which proposing a stepped approach to enable digital transformation and improve information management within Building Standards compliance processes.
