Fragmented Memory

Memories are how we record our past, but they are also our grounding for the future. This piece was made during a period of research for the exhibition Memories are Made of this in 2023 at Sarah Myerscough Gallery.
Memories are formed, shared, and distorted through time. Each time we recall a memory we make tiny alterations to the recollections, lose and gaining elements. Whole memories become fractured and reconnected. Fragmented Memory explored how memories break up and form tiny elements of a whole. Some bigger or more prominent than others. This is demonstrated through the assembly of elements in this brooch. The units are made of round wire that has been rolled flat then swaged into quills of different lengths, combining silver and 18 carat yellow gold to form a complete round brooch. These units represent the elements of a memory that is fragmented but still complete.
