This presentation offers an interpretation of Carol Rhodes' painting processes through research that was conducted into her comprehensive archive of notes, which included detailed plans and colour indexes corresponding to each of her paintings. These notes invariably convey the meticulous planning involved in her ideas, resonating with an internal process, and utilising colour codes to indicate quality and the potential for later re-use of the same colours. Tracing these notes not only highlights her painting methods but also provides insight into her creative process, particularly in relation to her interests in her own photos, aerial photography, geology, and geography books.

This research is manifest in my own paintings. By drawing inspiration from Rhodes' source materials and reflecting on her composition and colour usage I engage with her idea of 'hidden areas', which is key to creating paintings that evoke a sense of ambiguity, especially in the transitions of scenes she depicts.
