The Real Life Declaration of Arbroath; 1320-2720, "We're Half way There" (plus 2) 2022
The Declaration of Arbroath is a declaration of Scottish independence, made in 1320. It is in the form of a letter in Latin submitted to Pope John XXII, dated 6 April 1320, intended to confirm Scotland's status as an independent, sovereign state and defending Scotland's right to use military action when unjustly attacked.
Before the pandemic I had an 18 month intensive research phase of this project, invited by Historic Environment Scotland to make a series of works including a large scale sculptural installation that would be in parallel to Nationwide events celebrating the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath. I tested methodologies and formats of knowledge exchange and audience engagement developing a series of workshops and tools that were used I school and community settings. This explored in new ways to engage aspects of research related to national/political/social/gender etc. identity I have been testing for some time.
Unfortunately the pandemic completely put this off course and the main project, the large scale funded installation at the Abbey itself has been cancelled. However I have continued to develop the research and produced a large scale 3 banner installation for the RSA Annual exhibition 2022.
