BEEP 2022
Launched in 2012, BEEP (BiEnnial Exhibition of Painting) is a contemporary international painting prize based in Swansea, Wales.
BEEP supports imaginative and vibrant practice in contemporary painting.
BEEP returns in the summer of 2022 where the main Beep Painting Prize exhibition - 'Nothing has changed, Everything has changed' will take place at Elysium Gallery in Swansea
A Different Sort of Stress, oil on board, was selected, after an open call for entries from professional painters across the globe be part of the BEEP International Painting Prize 2020 by established international curator, Jonathan Powell.
The work selected for this international exhibition and important contemporary painting prize is part of ongoing personal visual research. My practice has been looking at ideas connected with the fragment, (inter)connection, legibility and proximity/ distance. The painting itself features repeated examples of repeated cursive writing, abstracted, broken down and developed into a composition which draws viewers toward its complex intricacy, without initial, straightforward comprehension. In terms of content, this work draws upon real everyday experiences from the workplace, and considers the ways that obfuscation and fragmented communications give rise to measurable stresses.
This work was installed in the Elysium Gallery, alongside painted works by a total of 135 other artists. This was a vibrant, wide-ranging, and ambitious exhibition. It opened on Friday 29th July and ran in Swansea until Saturday 10th September 2022. As an exhibition, it was supported by National Lottery Arts Funding, and represented a very important and influential event within contemporary painting in the UK and further afield.
