As an artist and researcher my work emerges from a process of being immersed in place. At Drawing Matters I intend to speak about this body of work, outlining its current form and future potential. It will be discussed in the context of site specific practice, linked to notions of belonging, otherness and the non-human. How can art reflect our sense of not knowing to encourage speculation and wonder?

In September 2015 I began a residency at Outlandia in Glen Nevis, supported by the Ben Nevis Partnership and London Fieldworks (www.outlandia.com). In this daunting and remote, off-grid location, I became interested in trying to make tangible connections with the surrounding mountain landscape. Rather than attempting to represent nature in a pictorial way, I wanted to explore physical, connections with landscape and its people, through energy.

What materialised through a process of testing was a series of lo-tech drawing contraptions powered by the wind. These were carefully ‘staged’ at various points in the landscape, anticipating encounters with unknown audience. Through these encounters a possible conversation or reflection is opened up between person and place.
