This solo exhibition aimed at examining my works in comparison to a wider construct of contemporary British painting. Emerging from the transformations of the British art scene over the last two decades is a pool of artists working in the field of abstract painting. As a loose group of well-established innovators these artists opening up complex new meanings for abstract art in particular by questioning what constitutes a painting and how it is made. The values of abstraction in Britain today are very much at one-remove from the rigours of modernist Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism.

By mixing and grinding decorators materials and graphic symbols, I am responding not only to the concerns of my generation (Fiona Rae, Ian Davenport, Paul Morrison, Glenn Brown, Gary Hume etc), but also synthesising contrasting ideas of popular culture with high art and decoration with humour.

My paintings are constructed by combining poured, abstract configurations of transparent varnishes and opaque household paints with embedded graphic stencils. These technical resources are at the service of a sharp-edged clarity and viscous liquidity. I juxtaposes Baroque elaboration with Morris Louis style poured veils. What becomes visible between the flattened layers are echoes and references to art history and popular culture, unfolding into a multiple mix of sensual and dense visual planes.
