In this solo exhibition I aimed at presenting very large to medium paintings that continued with my exploration of working at the interface of abstraction and pop. The work shown explored my given painted languages of combined abstract pouring techniques with hard-edged lines and stencils. A collision of styles and opticality was intended which is evident in the pouried household eggshell, gloss paints and tinted floor varnishes over ready-made adhesive stencils. The stencils are peeled off when dry and the process repeated again and again to develop both an optical and material layering effect. The flatness of the repeated surfaces is the focus, offering a mix of contrastingly delicate and bold passages of opaque and transparent planes.

The layering is part of a fracturing process, the breaking up, or ‘exploding’ of a recognizable image, a response to the multitude of broadcast and internet images. Intrusive, amorphous shapes emerge in the picture plane(s), fragmenting the surface: a reflexive representation of the physicality of the painting comes up against the pixilation of the digital image.
